The good, the bad and the gummy

My feet feel like two blocks of pressed tofu but all the things considered I think that the NY Magazine event was a success. I'll start with the bad - even though I listed the good first. 1) The event started late and even though the kitchen was prepared to serve everything, we served about an hour later than we were supposed to. A lot of the food came out cold and the matzoh balls got gummy. And cold. 2) I think that some tables got screwed and had courses skipped or got less food because there were more people at their tables. We actually had extra food sitting downstairs for tables that got skimped out on but no one ever got them!

So because of the late start time I was kind of stressed out. My mom came downstairs to the kitchen to tell us that everyone was happy and enjoying themselves and the food, but she's my mom! She isn't gonna throw a cold tempura mushroom at me. And then my publisher came down and said the same. Chance of him throwing a cold tempura mushroom at me: only about 4% more likely. I read the reviews on Brooklyn Vegan and some were pretty bad, but studies have shown anonymous people on the internet to be 113% meaner than the general populace. When I combine the data from those factors I can easily grade everything as a solid B.

It seems like everyone had fun, and that is probably the most important part. Man Man was more insane than a drum circle in Tompkins Square Park in 1992. But they sounded awesome and there wasn't a random guy playing "the bottle." (ie: tapping his empty 40 with a stick) They just may be my favorite newish band lately, besides the Prids.

I also saw some guy fall of his chair. If that isn't a measure of success then I don't know what is.

There are some pics up at NYC nosh, like this one:

People do seem to like complaining a lot more than they like praising. Sounds to me like you did great!

Hey Isa,

My fiance and I went last night and we had a fun time. The drinks were good. Some of the food was cold, and while the food was good, I think it would have been amazing warm. We also felt a little uncomfortable with the amount of food, we always wanted to take more but since it was communal, and we didn't know the other people (who were really nice), we felt awkward taking more.

I don't mean to be negative, but those were my thoughts. We had a lot of fun, but there were a few problems. It was really awesome to go a vegan event, where we knew we could eat everything!
Next time you have a Sunday brunch, we'd love to go!

I understand, things could have worked out better. I'm glad you had fun anyway! The next brunch is the first Sunday in June, and I promise that the food will be hot! Except for the stuff that is supposed to be cold. I promise that that will be cold.

Hi! My husband and I came and we had a great time, and everyone at our table loved the food. The edamame-corn and the jicama appetizers were sooo yummy, we went crazy over the mushroom tempura, I loved everything and think you did great. And everyone at our table was a major fan of VwaV.

I think it was a big success.

I thought the food was amazing, especially the seasame noodles w/seitan and the matzoh ball soup! Great job, I bet it was such a mess getting everything together but everyone at my table was highly satisfied! Looking forward to the next brunch at Vox Pop

I think people should think of that more often, it's so true!

As a whole, I found everything delicious. The shiitake tempura were AMAZING, and we also devoured the daikon latkes with the ridiculous applesauce.

The only thing my friend and I were miffed about was that the menu wasn't what we were served. Papaya and avocado summer rolls somehow turned into summer rolls with cucumber and mint. Coconut mango cupcakes turned into chocolate cupcakes with a blackberry. I don't understand at all why we didn't get all our courses. It is frustrating to pay $35 and feel like you're not getting what you were supposed to.

The attitude of everyone we were around (i.e., the strangers we shared our table with) was positive. My friend and I were quietly commenting to ourselves, but I didn't hear anyone else disappointed or angry.

What happened with that was that the produce we got in on Tueday was way under-ripe. The avocados, mangos and papayas were rock hard! So we had to improvise a bit.

So, we just got yer cookbook. I was all like "ooh, jewish vegan, mebbe I should email her this awesome matzoh ball soup recipe I have." I skimmed through it first, and it's a good thing I did. It would have been terribly embarassing to email you a recipe I stole from the internet that was apparently stolen from you. But now that I know where it came from: thank you for helping make Passover totally rock. That soup is amazing!
