Vegetarians who don't OM need not apply
There's a new vegetarian auction site - vegbay.com. There isn't much on there yet, mostly tibetan trinkets and "Om" jewelery. Oddly, no vegetarians that I know actually do the spirituality thing, except for my friend Michael who is obsessed with Dharma Punks. Vegetarianism has always been more ramen noodle than aromatherapy aloe rub for me. Then there's this auction on E-bay, a 100 pound girl selling off her entire punk rock wardrobe. I guess she's post punk now. Or, as Terry suggested, in rehab.

Hum... I have an Om courier bag... and a Tibetan dragon wall hanging...

Though, in my defense, I own them because of my support for the local Tibetan population and their plight with China, not for any overt spiritual reason (though, if there is any world leader that I truly respect, it is the Dalai Lama).

Besides, I like to have my cake and eat it too. Ramen is delicious, and aloe rubs feel good ;).

I'm sorry if what I wrote came across insulting or something, It was just interesting to me that the site was ALL that sort of stuff when it is not somehting I personally come across with vegetarians. OR, this is all part of my plan to alienate and insult fellow vegetarians.

No! no, not insulting at all! I actually was just trying to be funny :(.

I agree with you, it is strange, and when you mentioned it, I had to go "hum... but I have some of that stuff... why is that again?"

Because you are correct, it's not something that I would associate with vegetarians... especially given that Tibetans eat a fair amount of meat, Buddhist or not.

It's all part of my plan to insult people by not understanding what they are trying to say.

Vegbay is for the vegetarian and Green/eco-conscious communities, so whatever individuals and veg-friendly businesses want to sell is what appears on the auction. I think as long as you don't try and sell leather or products tested on animals, you can sell whatever you want. And it's free. (I just posted a book on the site.)

Most vegetarians I know (myself included) do not want to buy any product that was tested on animals... But I suppose there are vegetarians who are vegetarian simply for health reasons and not concerned with a cruelty-free lifestyle. I don't eat ramen noodles. :o)

i think it's because of marketing trying to package vegetarians into a "type" or lifestyle. it's interesting to me how much advertising, marketing and PR firms control our perceptions of identities these days.

i think the assumption is that if you are vegetarian and into "being healthy" you are also into yoga, and "spirituality". like Organic Style or whatever that magazine is.
on a side note, i've also noticed how that whole package is tied to feminity as well. i get chuckles from that one.
"Real Men Don't Eat Tofu." haha. yeah.

i study Buddhism among other things, and find those trinkets and the self help "spirituality" industry that has co-opted buddhism to be kind of annoying sometimes. which might not be a bad thing, because it makes me think. and i think it quite possibly fulfills all kinds of purposes, but it's not buddhism, i don''t think.
at it's best, the trinket phenom is kind of a hoodoo re-appropriative sensibility that is deeply american and kind of wonderful in a down home quirky way (samplidellic), and at it's worst it's vapid new age posturing and exploitative orientalism.
i dunno, it's interesting to me at any rate.
it's also interesting that it is so tied to vegetarianism.
many buddhist traditions aren't even vegetarian by our american terms.

Yeah, the "mean don't eat tofu" thing is something I've been running into a lot with the cookbook. I have to do a lot of "marketing" proposals and I keep feeling like saying the "target audience" is women, when actually I know more veg men than women, and as far as the show has gone, a lot of email and dvd orders are from men. I'd love to read an academic study with lots of big words on Men and Veg*nism. Thanks for bringing it up.

hah, yeah, i'd actually like to read a study like that too.
because i'm a closet theory dork.

you know....i think the way you all go about the show actually makes it alot more "man friendly" than some other veg stuff out there, BTW.

You know, a store by my apartment carries vegan wonton wrappers. I am not sure I have ever seen a non vegan wonton actually. I will ask Terry about making them, she's more wordly than I.

Why not sell your PPK DVDs on vegbay? More publicity for you!

Why not sell your PPK DVDs on the vegbay auction? A bit more self-promotion.
